May 25, 1979. Flight 191 leaves Chicago Ohare airport headed for Los Angeles. The flight never makes it out of Chicago as it crashed in a fiery ball of jet fuel flames next to a mobile home park shortly after takeoff. One of the greatest air disasters in the United States, all 270 people aboard were killed.
Soon after, reports started popping up of lights spotted in the field where the plane had crashed. The most common experience is residents in the mobile home hear knocking on their door only to find no one there when its opened. Variations of this occurrence include hearing footsteps up metal steps to the door before the knock and or actually having a figure stating “I need to find my luggage” when the door is opened then disappearing. The dogs at the nearby K9 training facility are said to bark in the direction of the crash site for no visible reason.
For 32 years no memorial existed for the crash. In 2011 a memorial was erected with the names of those who perished in the flight. In 2009 ten sixth grade classes raised money to erect the memorial after learning that their Assistant Principal lost both her parents in the tragedy. The memorial does not sit near the crash location but roughly 2 miles down the road at Des Plaines Lake Park.
