The Hanging Coffin, St. Georges Sesputia Church, Perryman, Md

Local Harford County Maryland folklore tells a unique tale of a Sea Captain who so loved sailing that he made sure that his feet would never rest on dry land, even in death.

Captain John Clark Monk's remains are said to stll lie shrouded in lead and suspended in chains in an underground vault at St. George's Episcopal Church in Perryman, MD.

Legend says that Captain Monk ordered his crew to honor his wishes that upon his death his feet would never touch ground. After his passing in 1820, the crew placed his body in a boat shaped coffin filled with rum and then headed towards Monk's self chosen final resting place. Upon reaching the destination, the crew carried him up the hill from the Chesapeake Bay and suspended his coffin in chains in the underground vault pictured here.

His remains still rest here,200 years later, along with those of his two wives and one daughter.
